This sublime chocolate is made with cocoa beans from the upper Amazon.

Meandering for more than 900 miles through a broad valley bottom in Peruvian Amazon rainforest, the Ucayali River is one of the main headwaters of the Amazon River. Near its banks outside the municipality of Pucallpa are hundreds of smallholder farms who grow this incredible cocoa.

These cocoa beans are so wonderful, we took extra time to hone our roasting profile and refining process. We are confident this will be one of your favorite single-origin chocolate bars. Ever.

While you are at it, also try our Ucayali River 47% milk chocolate--perhaps the best milk chocolate you've ever had.

      Cocoa Origin:

      Ucayali River, Peru

      Ingredients:

      • Organic cocoa beans
      • certified organic cane sugar
      • certified organic cocoa butter

      Tasting notes:

      citrus, nuts, red fruit

      Sourcing notes:

The Ucayali River flows southward in a broad valley between the high Andes on the west and low hills on the east. The confluence of the Ucayali and Maranon Rivers forms the mighty Amazon, which then flows another 4,000 miles to the Atlantic Ocean.

Partnering with international aid organizations and Peruvian companies, Ucayali River Cacao purchases fine-flavor cacao grown by smallholder farmers near Pucallpa. Their goal is to produce high quality cocoa beans while helping these farmers earn a good living rather than returning to coca production.

Ucayali River Cacao buys wet cacao at a premium price, expertly ferments it in wooden boxes, sun dries it on elevated shelves in greenhouses, and hand sorts each cocoa bean.

We receive these Amazonian cocoa beans in 110 pound bags directly from Ucayali River Cacao’s U.S. distributor.
